Test plantations with coniferous and deciduous tree species from different places of origin, research is being carried out into what the forest of tomorrow could look like. This area in the Zurich forest laboratory is one of 59 test areas throughout Switzerland. The site is part of the Waldlabor Zürich. More information about the test plantations in Switzerland can be found here (German).
Four coniferous and four deciduous tree species are being tested. Each species has seeds from four different locations of origin. A total of 108 trees of each species were planted. The trees were grouped into 12 x 12 m plots of 36 trees each within the test area. There are three plots for each species. This ensures that the growing conditions for each species are similar. Within each plot, the trees were subdivided according to their place of (seed) origin. A fence protects the young trees from being browsed by wild ungulates.
