QA/QC Check – Weekly

The weekly checklist of Swiss FluxNet.

IMPORTANT: In case of problems, please inform the respective T-SRP or SRP!

 Logger Check via SSH

Purpose: Check if Logger is active, EC data arrive at the Logger, EC data are written to a file and if EC data files were generated for the last 7 days.

  1. SSH: establish SSH connection to the data logger (e.g. LANNER)
  2. sonicshow: check if sonic data are incoming with command sonicshow
  3. irgashow / lgrshow / qclshow: check if IRGA / LGR / QCL data are incoming with command irgashow or lgrshow or qclshow NOTE! Please also check LGR and QCL data in this step.
  4. showstatus: check how much of the disk space on the logger is used (100% means no disk space left), run command showstatus and fill in the number shown under Use%
  5. filesize: check if filesize of newest EC file is increasing, e.g. for CH-FRU with command ls -l *.X* (the file extension of the EC binary files are starting with X)
  6. files: check if there are EC data files available for the last 7 days

Meteo Check in Grafana Dashboards

Purpose: For the last 30 days or longer: check if important meteo variables (6+3) look OK. Check if all other variables look OK.

  • We check meteo raw data using Grafana dashboards. They show data that are available on GL-RAW (where we store all our raw data) and were successfully uploaded to the database.
  • If a plot in the dashboard shows data gaps, then most likely the respective data file is really missing on our server GL-RAW.
  • If data are still stored in some temporary folder (i.e. not in the respective data type and site folder, e.g. 10_meteo in CH-OE2 on GL-RAW) then data are not plotted and missing from the database and therefore from the dashboard.

Flux Check in DIIVE or Grafana Dashboards

Purpose: For the last 30 days or longer: check if unrotated wind aggregates look OK, check if fluxes for H, CO2 and H2O look OK.

  • During the year we calculate Level-0 (preliminary) fluxes using FLUXRUN with EddyPro.
  • EddyPro outputs two results files: the traditional _full_output_ file (can be directly loaded in diive v0.21.0, and the newer _fluxnet_ file (these are shown in the Grafana Dashboards), whereby the latter file contains many more variables than the former.
  • Both files can be used to check recent fluxes and wind components.
  1. Check if unrotated wind variables u, v, w are between +/- 5 m s-1:
    • The name of the unrotated wind variables is U_UNROT, V_UNROT and W_UNROT in the _fluxnet_ file and u_unrot, v_unrot and w_unrot in the _full_output_ file.
  2. Check if fluxes look as expected.
    • The name of the sensible heat flux variable is H in the _fluxnet_ file and in the _full_output_ file.
    • The name of the CO2 flux variable is FC in the _fluxnet_ file and co2_flux in the _full_output_ file.
    • The name of the H2O flux variable is FH2O in the _fluxnet_ file and h2o_flux in the _full_output_ file.
