2021

FF-202312 (IRGA72)

  • Final Flux Version: FF-202312
  • Level-1 ID: Level-1_FR-20231219-000000 (merged from 2021_1_FF_CH-OE2_FR-20231218-191617 and 2021_2_FF_CH-OE2_FR-20231218-191924)
  • Level-4 ID(s):
    • will be part of the next FLUXNET release in 2024
  • Setup: Setup since 2003
  • Instruments: R350, R2, IRGA72
  • Scripts: fluxrun 1.3.1 (was 1.1.1 for fixed metadata run), bico 1.6.0 and 1.3.0, diive
  • FLUXNET upload: 28 Dec 2023 (with dynamic metadata / canopy height; original upload 7 Nov 2023 with fixed canopy height)
  • Notes:
    • In addition, there are flux calculations with fixed canopy height available: 2021_1_CH-OE2_FR-20230925-140544_FIXED_CANOPY_HEIGHT and 2021_2_CH-OE2_FR-20230824-175114_FIXED_CANOPY_HEIGHT. These were originally uploaded to FLUXNET but later updated with flux calculations using the dynamic canopy height.

FF-202101 (IRGA72)

  • Final Flux Version: FF-202101
  • Level-1 ID: Level-1_FR-20210410-222900
  • Level-4 ID(s):
  • Setup: Setup since 2003
  • Instruments: R350, R2, IRGA72
  • Scripts: fluxrun 0.5.0, bico 0.5.0, diive
  • FLUXNET upload: 23 Apr 2021
  • Notes:
    • Correction wind direction: Readme for CH-OE2_2020_2_wind_dir_correction_R2_20210507.csv:
      • Correction of wind_dir after the installation of the R2 Sonic on 15.10.2020 (replacement for the R350 Sonic). The new variable for the corrected wind direction is wind_dir_corr.
      • The correction of wind_dir was necessary because the wind direction calculated from the R2 sonic was off by 40° in comparison to previous wind directions from the R3-50. (edited LH)
      • RM, 07.05.2021; LH, edit 10.05.2021
    • Flux calculations used a dynamic metafile for changing sonic and vegetation height.
    • There were also two additional flux calculations for this year: FF-202004 and FF-202008. These two runs comprised only parts of 2020 and were shared with FLUXNET for a preliminary version of the Warm Winter 2020 dataset. However, with FF-202101 covering the full year, these two versions are now deprecated and not listed here separately.

FF-201908 (LGR)

  • Final Flux Version: FF-201908
  • Level-1 ID: ID2019-08-30T132502
  • Level-4 ID(s):
    • should be available in FLUXNET
  • Setup: Setup since 2018 (CH-INO)

  • FLUXNET upload: Methane Synthesis 2019 (upload 5 Sep 2019)
  • Notes:
    • First fluxes that were quality-controlled using Amp (diive).
    • Fluxes were recorded at CH-OE2, but as part of the InnoFarm project (CH-INO).
    • Although N2O fluxes were also calculated, only CH4 was shared with FLUXNET.
    • Fluxes in 2018_2 (after 27 Oct 2018) were recorded at 1Hz (see also notes herehttps://www.swissfluxnet.ethz.ch/index.php/sites/ch-ino-innofarm/data-ch-ino/ec-raw-binary-format-ch-ino-2/).
    • Spectral correction Fratini et al. (2012) did not work, also Horst et al. (1997) did not work, therefore switched to Moncrieff et al. (1997) instead.

FF-201902 (IRGA72, deprecated)

  • Final Flux Version: FF-201902
  • Level-1 ID: Level-1_ID2019-04-04T153152 / separate conversion in ID2019-03-30T190922
  • Level-4 ID(s):
    • Drought Study 2018: Level-3-4_FLUXNET2015-FN-20190615-beta-3_2004-2018 (FLUXNET)
  • Setup: Setup since 2003
  • Instruments: R350, IRGA72
  • Scripts: FCT 0.90, FCT 0.88, EddyPro 6.2.0 (Level-1), EddyPro 7.0.0 rc8 (with updated exe from 4 Apr 2019, Level-1 for 2017_2 and 2017_3), FM 0.93 (Level-1 merging), FQC 1.04 (Level-2)
  • FLUXNET upload: European Drought Study 2018 (upload 17 Apr 2019)
  • Notes:
    • Known issues: Fluxes have not been corrected for the Wrong Calibration Gas 2017 issue (unknown at the time). See here for affected time periods: Setup since 2003.
    • Fluxes were calculated with a preview version of EddyPro 7.0.0, see a description of the encountered issue here.
    • Similar to 2017, I made a subset of the fluxnet file from the EP output for EFDC upload, since the ghg-europe files no longer exist in this newer version of EP.
    • SSITC flag was missing from EP files, I inserted qc_* flag from the full_output file instead (same tests).

2017

FF-201902 (IRGA72)

  • Final Flux Version: FF-201902
  • Level-1 ID: Level-1_ID2019-04-17T110242 / merged results from: 2017_1: ID2019-03-30T190548, 2017_2: ID2019-04-04T153041, 2017_3: ID2019-04-04T153124 / separate conversions: 2017_2 in ID2019-03-30T190631, 2017_3 in ID2019-03-30T190750
  • Level-4 ID(s):
  • Setup: Setup since 2003
  • Instruments: R350, IRGA72
  • Scripts: FCT 0.90, EddyPro 6.2.0 (Level-1 for 2017_1, conversions for 2017_2 and 2017_3), EddyPro 7.0.0 rc8 (with updated exe from 4 Apr 2019, Level-1 for 2017_2 and 2017_3), FM 0.93 (Level-1 merging), FQC 1.04 (Level-2)
  • FLUXNET upload: European Drought Study 2018 (upload 17 Apr 2019)
  • Notes:
    • Fluxes for 2017_2 and 2017_3 were calculated with a preview version of EddyPro 7.0.0, see a description of the encountered issue here.
    • EP7 outputs are different for ghg-europe files. These files are now called fluxnet files and contain more output variables. Therefore merging of 2017_1 results with 2017_2 and 2017_3 was a bit tricky, since column names were not (exactly) the same. I made a subset of the verbose fluxnet outputs and then – after some formatting (column names …) merged all parts.
    • SSITC flag was missing from EP files, I inserted qc_* flag from the full_output files instead (same tests).

FF-201909 (IRGA75)

  • Final Flux Version: FF-201909
  • Level-1 ID: Level-1_ID2019-09-26T150805
  • Level-4 ID(s):
    • none (see Notes)
  • Setup: Setup since 2003
  • Instruments: R350, IRGA75
  • Scripts: FCT 0.92, EddyPro 7.0.4 (Level-1)
  • FLUXNET upload: none; Data for manuscript about IRGA comparison (Sabbatini et al.) (not uploaded to FLUXNET, see Notes)
  • Notes:
    • For CH-OE2, we already share IRGA72 fluxes for 2017. Here we also calculated the concurrently measured IRGA75 fluxes.
    • These fluxes were calculated to be shared for a manuscript that is in preparation at the time of writing (Sep 2019; update Feb 2024: manuscript never materialized). The ms compares IRGA72 and IRGA75 fluxes during time periods where both instruments measured at the same site.
    • Needs not to be uploaded and shared via FLUXNET, because we already share the IRGA72 fluxes. If we uploaded IRGA75 fluxes for the same period, the IRGA72 fluxes would be overwritten which we do not want.
    • With the introduction of Amp, Level-2 fluxes can be created on demand, soon also Level-3-4 fluxes.
    • Final Level-3-4 fluxes are currently only available for years that we uploaded to FLUXNET.

FF-201902 (IRGA72)

  • Final Flux Version: FF-201902
  • Level-1 ID: Level-1_ID2019-04-16T120813 / merged results from: 2016_1-3: ID2019-03-30T190345, 2016_2: ID2019-03-30T190515
  • Level-4 ID(s):
  • Setup: Setup since 2003
  • Instruments: R350, HS100, IRGA72
  • Scripts: FCT 0.88, EddyPro 6.2.0 (Level-1), FM 0.93 (Level-1 merging), FQC 1.04 (Level-2)
  • FLUXNET upload: European Drought Study 2018 (original upload of Level-2_QC-20190417-104626 on 17 Apr 2019, replaced by Level-2_QC-20190529-181114 on 29 May 2019)
  • Notes:
    • Important Info Regarding Quality Control Flags In Level-2 Data:
      • During 2016_1 (before the R3 was removed and the HS100 installed), the sensible heat fluxes and generally the SA data do not look completely OK with sometimes seemingly erroneous data. The QC flag for Level-2_QC-20190529-181114 during 2016_1 includes the angle-of-attack (AOA) flag from the EddyPro output as additional QC criterion (see Emmel et al. 2018 for details). By including the AOA flag, many of the problematic data points were filtered out.
      • Several steps were necessary to assemble the overall flag:
        • Step 1: Level-2_QC-20190417-104626 does not include AOA flag for the whole year
        • Step 2: Level-2_QC-20190529-175532 does include AOA flag for the whole year
        • Step 3: generate a new file that includes data from Level-2_QC-20190529-175532 for 2016_1 and data from Level-2_QC-20190529-175532 for 2016_2 and 2016_3, filenames of the combined files are full_output_QC_FINAL_FLAG_QC-20190529-181114.csv and ghg-europe_eddy_QC_FINAL_FLAG_QC-20190529-181114.csv
    • During 2016_2 fluxes were calculated from the temporarily installed Gill HS-100 sonic anemometer.
    • The spike hard flag would have removed a lot of data during this year due to spikes in e.g. the raw CO2 mixing ratio time series. Flag was disabled, but needs to be checked for future runs.

  • FLUXNET upload: FLUXNET2015 dataset (upload 13 Jul 2016)
  • Notes:
    • Known issues:
      • PPFD: There is an issue with the meteo variable PPFD that was uploaded together with other meteo variables as part of the flux data sharing. The maximum values of PPFD were cut-off above a certain threshold. However, the selected threshold was too low, resulting in data gaps around noon during the warmer seasons. This needs to be corrected in future uploads. (found 11 Aug 2020 -LH)

      • 2011-05-28 until 2011-08-17: problem with sonic AGC: fluxes look very good, but AGC increases up until 100 (which would mean that the signal was very bad). AGC was not considered during this time period because data quality seems to be very good.

This needs to be corrected in future uploads. (found 11 Aug 2020 -LH)
    • 2007-05-16 until 2007-06-02: problem with sonic AGC: fluxes look very good, but AGC increases up until 100 (which would mean that the signal was very bad). AGC was not considered during this time period because data quality seems to be very good. Similar problem like the AGC problem in 2011 described above.
    • Jul 2016: [2004-2015] v2016-07 calculated with EddyPro 610, FluxCalc 0.74, Anaconda3 v4. Run using the screened meteo data by Patrick Koller.
    • Since these calculations were done, we have collected additional information for this year regarding sonic height and canopy height. This info was collected in EC Raw Binary Format (CH-OE2) and could be used in future flux calculations.
