EC Raw Binary Format Tables

List of abbreviations used in the description of the raw binary file formats during different time periods, e.g. EC Raw Binary Format (CH-INO).

Legend

  • * … The star marks significant changes in the setup that required a new time period
  • BICOBinary Conversion: Time periods with the same letter have the exact same binary format. bico is the name of the tool that is used to convert binary raw data to ASCII files (source code). For a list of the different data blocks coming from the instruments see here.
  • Binaries From … The first valid file that contains the first data for the respective time period.
  • Binaries To … The last valid file that contains the last data for the respective time period.
  • EC … eddy covariance
  • FluxProcNotes … Flux processing notes
  • FR … Processing settings: letter followed by number. Time periods with the same letter and number can use the same processing settings after binary conversion to ASCII (via bico). Same letters but different numbers are time periods where the general processing is the same (e.g. same order of incoming data, …), but there were changes in the setup (e.g. sensor separation, measurement height). Different letters mean that there are significant differences (e.g. new sensor added). FR stands for fluxrun, a tool for calculating fluxes using EddyPro (see here).
  • GA … Gas analyzer. If the GA is given in brackets it means that the GA was removed from the site but its data (empty) is still part of the data stream / raw data. In this case the raw data contains mostly empty columns (status and data size of the GA is still recorded). GA in brackets means that the instrument is still part of the data stream but data are empty, e.g. when it was removed from the site.
  • GA1S, GA2S … Gas analyzer separation: Northward N, Eastward E and Vertical V separation of the GA inlet in relation to the SA center, given in cm (EddyPro needs distances in cm), for more info see here. Also given is the tube length TL in cm if the GA is a closed-path analyzer, and the tube inner diameter TD in cm. Example: N+5 E-7 V-20 TL100 TD0.95 means that the GA was 5cm to the north and 7cm to the west of the SA, and 20cm below the SA, with a tube length of 1m and a tube inner diameter of 9.5mm.
  • HS50 … Gill HS-50 sonic anemometer, the hyphen followed by a letter (e.g. HS50-A) gives the binary structure of the incoming data block. For more info see here: bico data blocks
  • HS100 … Gill HS-100 sonic anemometer, the hyphen followed by a letter (e.g. HS100-A) gives the binary structure of the incoming data block. For more info see here: bico data blocks
  • IRGA72 … LI-COR 7200 enclosed path infrared gas analyzer, the hyphen followed by a letter (e.g. IRGA72-A) gives the binary structure of the incoming data block. For more info see here: bico data blocks
  • IRGA75 … LI-COR 7500 open path infrared gas analyzer, the hyphen followed by a letter (e.g. IRGA75-A) gives the binary structure of the incoming data block. For more info see here: bico data blocks
  • LGR … Laser GA (Los Gatos), the hyphen followed by a letter (e.g. LGR-A) gives the binary structure of the incoming data block. For more info see here: bico data blocks
  • n.a. … Not available, check notes.
  • QCL … Quantum-cascade laser (Aerodyne), the hyphen followed by a letter (e.g. QCL-C) gives the binary structure of the incoming data block. For more info see here: bico data blocks
  • R350 … Gill R3-50 sonic anemometer, the hyphen followed by a letter (e.g. R350-A) gives the binary structure of the incoming data block. For more info see here: bico data blocks
  • SA … Sonic anemometer
  • SA Ori … Measurement height of the SA given in m and the direction in which the north arrow of the SA points given in degrees.
  • VEGH … Vegetation height in m, available for some sites.
  • Year … Given with an underscore to separate time periods with changes in the setup or the data format. For example, 2019_4 was still affected by the wrong calibration gas issue, while 2019_5 was not.
